Its moft confiderable poffeffors, after the Conqueft, was the family of Erleigh, or de Erlega, fo called from a lordfhip near Reading in Berkihire, who had large poffeffions in this county, viz. the manors of Beckington, Durfton, Babcary, Michael's-church, the manor and hundred of North-Petherton, and the manor of Somerton-parva, denominated from them, Somerton-Erle, or Erleigh. The firft of the name that appears in this county is John de Erlegh, who 7 Hen. II. paid five marks for the fcutage of his lands in this county. This John died 11 Hen. II. and in the fame year Adela his widow paid the fame fcutage.
He was fucceeded by William de Erleigh his fon, ..."
"... John de Erlegh(I), a Norman knight, paid 5 marks in 1161 for scutage of his lands at Beckington, Somerset to King Henry II; he also held the manor and hundred of North Petherton. John de Erlegh(I) died in 1165 and in the same year his widow, Adela, paid 5 marks scutage [11,v.2,p.198]. He was succeeded by his son William de Erlegh(I)."
